Summary:
Shoveler ducks have a long spoon-like bill, a dark green head, white breast and brownish flanks. Male Shovelers can be easily identified, but the are plain brownish colour.
Ecology:
They feed on plankton, the bill with its lamellae being used to filter plant material and small aquatic animals. For this reason, the duck stretches its head and lays its bill in the water. Small flocks can be seen with their ducked half underwater.
Habitat:
Shoveler ducks can be found mainly on freshwater, but occasionally at sea.
